External backups: backup points, restore and individual files

The external backup automatically backs up your server every night to a backup server of its own, separate from your server's storage. Depending on the booked option you can go back 5, 14 or 30 days. The backup runs in the background; your server does not need to be stopped for it.

Booking

You choose the backup when ordering or later in the Upgrade tab under Additional options. Without a booking, the Backups tab shows the Book backup button that takes you there.

The Backups tab

At the top you see the booked retention, the last and the next backup. Below are all backup points of the booked days, grouped by day. Older points are removed automatically.

Restoring the whole server

  1. Click Restore server next to the desired point.
  2. Leave Back up current state first switched on (recommended): before overwriting, today's state is saved on the backup server so that you can go back if necessary.
  3. Enter the server name to confirm and click Restore now. For security you additionally confirm with your passkey or password.

The progress appears in the tab. During the restore the server is not reachable - a few minutes depending on the size.

What stays the same during a restore

IP addresses, firewall rules, disk size and booked resources stay as they are today. Existing snapshots are deleted. If the disk is now larger than in the backup, enlarge the partition in the system afterwards if necessary - see Growing partition and file system.

Downloading individual files

  1. Click Files next to the desired point. When opening it for the first time, it takes up to a minute until the backup is readable.
  2. Click through disk and partition to the folders.
  3. Use the download icon next to a file or folder to prepare the download. Folders are provided as a ZIP file; the size per download is limited (the limit is shown in the dialogue).
  4. The finished download appears under Prepared downloads. It can be retrieved once and is deleted afterwards.

After cancellation or removal

If you cancel or remove the backup, the backups are kept for as many days as you had booked and are deleted automatically afterwards.

Managed servers

With managed servers our team takes care of the restore - included. In the Backups tab, use Request restore to choose the point and whether the whole server or individual files should be restored. This creates a support ticket.

Does the backup count towards my storage?
No. The backups are stored on the separate backup server.
"An operation is already running for this server" - what does this mean?
A restore or reinstallation is still running. Wait until it has finished.
"The selection is too large"
Choose a smaller folder or individual files.
My server is suspended - is it still backed up?
Yes, backups continue. You can restore as soon as the server is active again.
