In the Reinstallation tab you replace your server's system with a fresh image. This is helpful if you want a different operating system, want to start over or no longer have access. IP addresses, hardware and firewall are retained; the disk is replaced.
How to proceed
- Choose the operating system and the version.
- Define access and password - as during setup.
- Choose the SSH keys. Without a key, login is only possible via the console.
- Leave Create snapshot beforehand switched on. We then save today's state as a snapshot before the system is replaced. If your snapshot quota is full, delete a snapshot first.
- Click Reinstall, check the summary, enter the server name to confirm and additionally confirm with your passkey or password.
During and after reinstallation
The progress appears at the top of the server page. This usually takes one to two minutes. Afterwards, if you chose a random password, retrieve the new initial password. Because the system is new, it has new SSH host keys - your SSH program therefore warns you when connecting for the first time. Remove the old entry, for example with ssh-keygen -R 203.0.113.10.
Snapshot before reinstallation
The snapshot is named vor-neuinstallation- with date and time and appears in the Snapshots tab. With it you get the old system back if something is missing. It counts towards the quota and, like all snapshots, expires after 14 days. Delete it when you no longer need it - only then is the old disk released as well.
Waiting period
After a reinstallation, the next one is only possible after a waiting period. The tab shows from when. If a reinstallation failed, no waiting period applies.
Your own system via ISO
If ISO installation is enabled for your plan, the tab additionally shows the ISO installation card: insert an ISO image, restart the server and install the system via the console. We do not offer a DHCP server - enter IP address, gateway and netmask from the card statically.
All data will be deleted
Reinstallation replaces the disk completely. Back up important data outside the server beforehand or let the snapshot be created.
