How to switch internet providers

Step 1: Order a new hosting package

You can start setting things up even before the domain transfer - your website will continue to run with your old provider in the meantime.

Step 2: Request an AuthCode from your previous provider

The auth code (also known as Auth-Info or EPP code) is a security code that prevents unauthorised domain transfers. You can find it in the customer area of your current provider or obtain it by contacting their support team. The code is usually valid for 30 days - so please only request it when you are ready to transfer your domain.

Step 3: Start the domain transfer

You can use the AuthCode to request a domain transfer with us. We will initiate the transfer with the relevant registry (e.g. DENIC for .de domains). Depending on the domain extension, the transfer takes anywhere from a few hours to a maximum of 5 days.

Important: When performing a cancellation of your contract with your previous provider, please explicitly state ‘change of provider’ as the reason - not simply ‘cancellation’. Otherwise, your domain may be deleted instead of transferred!

Step 4: Migrate the website and emails

Whilst the domain transfer is in progress, your website files, databases and mailboxes can be transferred. This includes:

All website files (HTML, PHP, images, etc.)
Databases (MySQL/MariaDB)
Email mailboxes with all messages
Configurations and forwarding

Step 5: DNS migration and go-live

As soon as the domain is registered with us, the DNS settings will be updated. Your website will then be accessible via our German data centre. DNS propagation usually takes just a few hours worldwide - during this time, the website will be accessible via both servers, so there will be no downtime.

AuthCode procedure (.de, .com, .net, .org, .info)

For most domain extensions, the AuthCode procedure applies: you request the code from your previous provider and enter it with your new provider. The KK form, which used to be sent by fax, is now only required in the event of a change of ownership - not for a simple change of provider.

Special features of .de domains (DENIC)

DENIC, as the German registry, makes the transfer particularly straightforward: using the AuthInfo2 procedure, the transfer is often completed within a few hours. The domain remains accessible throughout the entire transfer - there is no ‘downtime’.

Change of ownership vs. change of provider

When you simply switch providers, the domain owner remains the same - only the technical provider changes. If the owner is also to be changed (e.g. in the case of company takeovers), a change of ownership is also required, which involves separate documentation. Please get in touch; we’d be happy to advise you.

01How long does it take to switch internet providers?

Depending on the domain extension, the domain transfer takes between a few hours (.de) and a maximum of 5 days (.com, .net). The website migration can take place at the same time and is usually completed within a day.

02How much does it cost to move your website to a new hosting provider?

Our migration service is completely free of charge. You only pay for the new hosting package - we’ll handle the transfer at no extra cost.

03What is an AuthCode and where can I get one?

04Could I lose any emails whilst moving house?

No, provided the migration is carried out professionally. We will migrate all existing emails and set up the mailboxes so that no messages are lost. During the transition, emails will be delivered to both servers.

05Do I need to perform a cancellation on my old contract?

You can also transfer your domain whilst your contract is still active. You should carry out the cancellation of your hosting with your previous provider in good time to avoid making duplicate payments. Please check the notice periods in your contract documents.

06Will my website be offline whilst it is being migrated?

If carried out correctly: no. We set up your website on our servers whilst it is still running with your previous provider. The DNS changeover is only carried out once everything is working properly.

07What will happen to my subdomains?

Subdomains are transferred along with the main domain. You will need to set these up again in our Control Panel after the migration and link them to the relevant directories - or we can do this for you as part of our migration service.
