PHP is the most important scripting language on web hosting servers - WordPress, Shopware, TYPO3 and many other systems are built on it. Accordingly, we are often asked which PHP versions we support.
Which PHP versions does SpeedIT Solutions currently support?
The following PHP versions are available on our web servers:
- PHP 7.4 - PHP 8.5 (as of 18 December 2025)
- PHP 5.6 - PHP 7.3 - available from support on request (separate server, please ask before ordering)
You conveniently select the PHP version per domain in the KeyHelp control panel. Our guide using PHP versions via SSH shows how to work with a specific version via SSH.
You can always see which PHP versions the PHP project currently maintains at php.net/supported-versions.php. There, versions are divided into three groups: active support (green), security fixes only (yellow) and end of life - no more updates (red).
Note on PHP 7.4
We continue to support PHP 7.4 so that you can move your projects to PHP 8 at your own pace. However, PHP 7.4 has not received security updates from the PHP project since the end of 2022. Support for PHP 7.4 may therefore be discontinued in the course of server and security updates.
We will inform you in good time via newsletter and blog post. Our recommendation: plan your move to a current PHP 8 version now - that way you decide on the timing yourself.
Why is a current PHP version important?
- Security: only maintained PHP versions receive security updates. When vulnerabilities in an older version become known, they remain open there for good - a current version protects your website, your data and that of your customers.
- Speed: every new PHP generation works more efficiently. Your pages load faster and the server handles more requests - visitors appreciate it, and it has a positive effect on your search engine ranking.
- Compatibility: current versions of WordPress, Shopware, TYPO3 and other systems as well as many plugins and extensions require modern PHP versions. With a current PHP version, all updates and new features remain available to you.
- Future-proofing: updating early lets you plan the move calmly - instead of acting under time pressure when a version reaches the end of its support.
Why do we still support older PHP versions?
Not every website can be switched over overnight: adapting older projects often takes time and budget. That is why older PHP versions give you the leeway you need. At the same time, additional security features in our shared hosting protect all web projects on the server. If we have to switch off a PHP version, we will inform you in good time via newsletter and blog post.
Which PHP version should I use?
Use the most recent PHP version that your web project supports. That way you benefit from the best performance and highest security and remain independent of switch-off dates for older versions.
Our tip for switching: check beforehand whether your CMS, theme and extensions are approved for the new version, and create a backup. Then change the PHP version in the control panel and test your website. Our support team will be happy to help with any questions.
