Our website has recently been given a modernised look, without compromising our core identity - and this is far more than just a new design. Behind the interface lies a complete technological overhaul: we have migrated our website from WordPress to our own in-house developed platform. The result is a website that loads noticeably faster, operates without cookies or external sources, offers a significantly higher level of security and, for the first time, is also available in English. In this post, we explain why we’ve taken this approach and what improvements this brings for you.
Why we’ve moved away from WordPress
WordPress served us well for many years. It is flexible, widely used and the right choice for many websites. However, with growing demands for speed, security and data protection, we reached limits that could no longer be neatly resolved.
A website made up of many plugins
At its core, WordPress provides a content management system for posts and pages. Almost everything else a professional corporate website needs is added via plugins - mostly from different providers. Typically, these are extensions for:
search engine optimisation, sitemaps and redirects
Caching and image optimisation for faster loading times
Security, login protection and backups
Contact forms and spam protection
Cookie notices and consent
Page layouts, knowledge bases and review widgets
Each of these plugins brings its own code, its own updates and its own security risks. Updates must be installed on an ongoing basis and coordinated with one another, as not every extension is compatible with every other one. Every additional plugin also adds to loading times, and some load fonts, scripts or widgets from third-party servers - with consequences for speed and data protection. On top of that, the website and the customer portal were running on different systems, meaning that content and product data had to be maintained in duplicate.
Flexibility through a bespoke solution
Instead of piling on more extensions, we opted for a clean break: a platform that does exactly what we need - and nothing we don’t need. Search engine optimisation, caching, image optimisation, forms, redirects, multilingual support and reviews are no longer add-ons, but an integral part of the system. Everything works seamlessly together, comes from a single source and is maintained as a unified whole.
This makes us independent of the development pace and licensing models of third-party providers. If a page needs a new feature, we develop it to fit our requirements exactly - without having to compromise by using a plugin built for thousands of other websites. We assemble content using flexible building blocks that are directly linked to our product data.
A single platform for the website and the customer portal
The new website is based on the same platform as our new customer portal. Products, tariffs and services are drawn from a shared database. If a tariff changes, it is immediately updated everywhere - on the product page as well as in the ordering process. This avoids inconsistencies and ensures that you always receive reliable information.
For our team, this in-house development brings with it a modern content management system: content is managed in modules, undergoes approval where necessary, and can be traced at any time via a version history.
Now also available in English - more languages to follow
With this change, our website has become multilingual. Content, the knowledge base and the shop are now also available in full in English - from the product page through to the tariff selection and the ordering process. You can switch the language with a single click in the top right-hand corner; each page has its own permanent URL in the respective language.
Multilingual support is built directly into the platform rather than being added as an afterthought. This allows us to add further languages with minimal effort: we are currently working on a Spanish version, with further languages in the pipeline.
Knowledge base and blog: find the right answer faster
A large part of our website consists of knowledge resources: guides, background information and news relating to hosting, domains, email and security. We have completely revamped this section so that you can find answers more quickly and understand them more easily.
Clear, organised topic sections: The knowledge base is organised by topic. Frequently searched-for articles appear directly on the knowledge base’s home page.
Smart search: Relevant articles appear as you type - without having to go via a results page.
Table of contents in every article: You can jump straight to the section you’re looking for, and the current section is highlighted as you read.
Reading time at a glance: Every article and blog post shows approximately how long it will take to read.
Full-size screenshots: Images in guides open in a large view with zoom at the click of a button - ensuring details remain clearly visible.
Further reading: Related articles and other posts guide you straight to the next relevant topic.
Help without detours: If you can’t find the answer, you can contact support directly from within the article.
On the blog, a reading progress indicator, a numbered table of contents and links to older and newer posts help you keep track of everything. This turns individual articles into a cohesive reference work.
The leap in performance: from around 1.2 seconds to around 360 milliseconds
You’ll notice the change most clearly in terms of speed. According to our measurements, page load times have dropped from just under 1.2 seconds to around 360 milliseconds - meaning the website is now more than three times as fast. This is made possible by modern rendering, in which several components work together:
Server-side rendering: Pages are generated in full on the server and arrive ready-made - your browser no longer needs to assemble anything.
Intelligent caching: Once generated, pages are cached and delivered directly upon subsequent visits. If we change content or pricing plans, the cache is updated specifically to reflect these changes.
Streamlined code: Only what a page actually needs is loaded - without the bloat from themes and extensions.
Modern image formats: Images are automatically delivered in suitable sizes and in WebP format, and are only loaded when they appear on the screen.
No third-party servers: All resources come directly from us - there are no delays caused by external services.
Cookie-free and without external sources
Our website does not set any cookies when you visit it, nor does it load any third-party content. We deliver fonts, images, scripts and even our customer reviews entirely ourselves. We query review portals in the background and display the results directly on our pages - without your browser having to contact a third-party server.
For you, this means: when you visit our website, no data is transferred to third parties, and you don’t have to click through lengthy cookie notices. For us, data protection isn’t an afterthought, but an integral part of our architecture.
Greater security through clear separation and a reduced attack surface
Many security vulnerabilities on the web do not originate at the core of a system, but in extensions and embedded third-party scripts. By developing our own solution, we have significantly reduced this attack surface and designed the architecture with security in mind from the outset:
- Modern, clearly delineated interfaces: The website receives tariffs, prices and product information via a modern API system that provides exclusively public product data. Customer data remains strictly separate from this - the public pages do not come into contact with it.
- Separate areas: The website and the customer area operate under separate addresses. Logins, orders and personal data remain within the secure customer area.
- No plugin ecosystem: Every function is part of our own, tested code.
- Strict security policies in the browser: A Content Security Policy specifies which content a page is permitted to load and execute. This effectively blocks any injected code.
- Hosted in Germany: The platform runs on our own infrastructure in German data centres.
How you benefit
Ultimately, what matters is what you get out of it. The new website offers you a number of benefits:
Get where you want to go faster: pages load almost instantly - even when you’re out and about on your smartphone and on slower connections.
Reliable information: Prices and services are always consistent and up to date, both on the website and during the ordering process.
In your language: All content and the shop are available in German and English, with more languages to follow.
Privacy included: No cookies, no third-party providers, no data sharing whilst browsing.
Find out more quickly: Instant search, tables of contents and related articles take you straight to guides and answers.
Nothing is lost: Your bookmarks and familiar links will still work - all previous addresses will take you to the corresponding new page.
Conclusion: faster, more secure, more data-efficient - and international
The switch from WordPress to our own platform was a major step that has paid off. The new website is more than three times as fast, operates without cookies or external sources, protects customer data through a clear separation of data, and is now also available in English. Together with the client area, it forms a unified foundation on which we can develop our services even more quickly in future - with a Spanish version coming next.
